Born 1958 (Thailand) / Works in Thailand
Kamol Phaosavasdi studied in Los Angeles but later returned to Bangkok, where he established a considerable reputation in the 1980s. His politically charged conceptual installations and performances deal with social abuses and environmental issues. Recurring themes in his work are pollution and the large-scale sex industry in Thailand - he has previously carried out work related to HIV and prostitution. Phaosavasdi is a pioneer of new media art in Thailand, working with video and digital media and exploring the effects of light on space. He lectures in media art at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

The Work: Inspired by the agglutination format of HIV blood tests at Anonymous Clinics, Phaosavasdi utilizes the visual image of the result (positive/negative) together with random code numbers of tested people represented by snapshots of people in Bangkok city. Combining fact and artistic interpretation, Phaosavasdi insists on the idea that no matter whom we are we are all living in the same society.
